This week is as good a time as any other to consider what justice is to us as individuals and as a collective society, both locally and globally.

With Derek Chauvin’s trial currently underway this week, recent headlines telling us that billionaires became exponentially richer during what was the worst of the coronavirus pandemic for so many others economically, the quest to find perpetrators behind the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, new science and coverage revealing how climate change severely affects those in certain socio-economic classes globally— and the list goes on and on—it’s time to pause for a few moments and consider: what is justice?

This writing prompt is meant to inspire reflection and purposeful writing that hopefully continues far beyond this week alone. It is important to start considering this topic in earnest and deliberately at some point, especially in today’s world. Nevertheless, this week’s writing task should still only be looked at as a starting-off point… the beginning of an ongoing dialogue, a draft that ends with the phrase “to be continued…”

Writing about what justice is and isn’t, what it does and does not entail, what it should and should not entail, who is and is not ultimately responsible for administering it, etc., could take an entire lifetime and perhaps even span eternity. So, while this week’s writing prompt may seem daunting at first, it will seem less daunting if writing a short essay about justice this week is more of a starting-off point, as one portion of an ongoing and larger dialogue, as one draft that will continue to be developed in the future.
